    Retrieving distance

Is there any way I can accurately estimate distances covered off-road. I used to do a lot of off-road running in Bristol when I was at uni at a rather quick pace, compared to at present. At that time however, I had no Garmin and so never actually knew how far I was running.

I can still recall the routes I ran very vividly, so that shouldn't be a problem, its just knowing how to get the route information, the only thing I am capable of is doing an AA route planner between two points! I'm guessing there may be some fancy website which will allow you to input various points to calculate the route, but I wouldn't know where to start.

    Thanks for any help

Map my run is quite a good one......free and no software to down/up (??) load and if I can use any numpty can!!

Not saying you're a numpty Ian obviously but more that it's quite 'user' friendly.....you can share routes as well or somehting but not quite figured that bit out yet!!

I use Map my run as well, its very simple to use.

Only problem I've had is after the new interface was released the elevation figures are way out.

I added some length and extra climb to a run I had done, the original run was 22mile 10,500ft climbing on a gps, it worked it out as 30mile and 4,500ft!

Mapmyrun is alright, I have started using fetcheveryone.com as that is more UK focused and just seems to work better. I know there is a few forumites already lurking around there.

Also use the Ordenance Survey site as you can now map and measure runs on an OS map. Look at stollys running adventures for a few examples. The distance is rounded up or down to nearest mile and there is no ascent but it can give you a rough guide and is sometimes easier than looking at satellite imagery.

    I use runningahead.com

I like their interface best (and the elevation stats always come out quite close to my contour-counting off the OS map)

    Great suggestion!

Just been on map my run, brilliant website, i'll try the other websites too. The only thing is i'm finding it quite addictive already, did you know I walk 0.3 miles to get my sandwich on a daily basis, with a gradient of 1ft!!

Cheers for the suggestions, best get back to work now
