The Slieve Donard Mountain Race is the oldest mountain race in Ireland, starting in 1945.The current course from the Newcastle Centre by any route to Donard summit and return to the centre is just under 5.5 miles in length with a climb of 850 metres and has a fastest time of 53:34 set by John Brooks of Scotland.

Des Woods of Mourne Runners won the 2008 race in 56:05, Neil Carty of North Belfast Harriers was second in 58:25 and Andrew Niblock third in 59:10. Nine times winner Deon McNeilly was fifth in 59:47.

Shalene ward of Mourne Runners won the women's race in 69:09.
