    Clwydian Hills FRA Relay Recce

I had my first ever look at the Clwydian's this weekend as I and 4 other club members went down to check out the terrain.

It looks like it will make a terrific venue, some good running, testing climbs, great descents.

Camped at http://www.thegoldenlioninn.com/ and would recommend it as a base for anyone else thinking of recceing.
Beer and Food is excellent and reasonably priced.

Good to meet Welsh Harrier for a beer in the pub as well on Saturday night, and I'm sure we'll meet again over he coming months.

Recce of leg 1 and leg 4 from Golden Lion, Llangynhafal - Sunday 10th August, 9.45am for 10am start.
Between 10 and 11 miles, expect to take 2 to 2½ hours. Pub does food from 12 noon to 2pm on Sundays.

If I can join you I will - not sure yet.

But be careful. We did leg 3 on Saturday and the long climb up the 1st gully is totally overgrown with a combo of Bracken, Thistles, and Nettles with the odd really prickly gorse type section thrown in for good measure.

May be on my own but am going anyway. If anyone else decides to come along I hope to set off at 10am.

Sorry Swoop - I can't make it - I've got a little problem at the back of my leg that needs a few days rest if I am to have a chance of making the Sedbergh Hills Race.

Yes thanks, just two of us.
We ran from the Golden Lion and did leg 1 as far as the knoll at the top of the last descent and then picked up leg 4 to the finish and back to the pub. 10.5 miles and 3400 feet according to Sport Tracks (3800 feet if you believe Garmin!). So we did the "sting in the tail" twice!! As Witton Park said, the bracken and gorse going up the valley towards Stony Gulley is horrendous. Full of nettles as well. I got stung everywhere and spiked (from the gorse I think) in my achilles. Pulled the spike out but it broke. Managed to get the splinter out but my achilles is quite sore and inflamed now. Will hopefully be ok after a night's rest. Had a curry and a couple of pints in the pub afterwards. Highly recommended.
