    Lakeland Classics

Does anyone know how the team points are calculated for this? (Obviously the answer is yes But would someone tell me please?)

It is a bit like the Schleswig-Holstein question which Lord Palmerston said was so complicated that only three people in Europe had ever understood it. One (Prince Albert) was dead, one (a German professor) went mad and he was the third but he had forgotten.

    Individual points are calculated as:

200-(runners time in secs) x 100 divided by winner's time in secs.

This means a runner taking twice as long as the winner gets nul points.

Team points for three runners per race are calculated on the same basis but both sexes count and teams can be different for every race.

Brian Martin does the sums by computer!

Oh and Borrowdale usually win it although I think Dark Peak have a chance this year.

    OK?

    uh
So for Wasdale: Pete Vale finished in 231.07mins and got 100 pts.
But if I read your calc right:

    200-231 x 100 / 231 = 13points
i think I might be joining the German Professor

    er...

Pete Vale was the winner, so his calc is the easy one!

    200 - ((HisTime/HisTime)x100) = 200 - 100 = 100

    You just beat me.......

    200 - 100 (231/231) = 100 !!

On a related(ish) topic. Seeing as Mark Palmer has already sown up the Vet 40 prize, will almost definitely come second in the seniors and in all likelihood win the 6 race series as well, and assuming one can only win one mug, which of the competitions would take precedence.

Gee! And three of the six races are still to be run. Things can change.

No one can win more than one mug. I think there are 16 available this year because Pete Bland Sports are sponsoring the LCT so when the normal category recipients have been allocated Brian and I will look at where any "spares" should go on merit. There is no hierarchy because the meritorious arguments can vary from year to year eg in theory 9 different runners could be counters for the winning team prize. However we would not give 9 mugs away to the winning team but usually just 3.

The number of mugs awarded has increased over the years:

    2002 9
    2003 10
    2004 10
    2005 11
    2006 12
    2007 12

Interestingly (for anoraks) neither Wendy D or Scoffer who have won a mug in all 6 previous LCT years will win one this year (well probably not in the case of Scoffer).

Pleasingly Pete Vale will win the overall series and, as I wrote in my 2007 Review in The Fellrunner, Pete has come second for the last three consecutive years to three different winners despite increasing his points total each year.

One of the pleasures of organising the LCT is the runners (others include John Hunt, Leigh Warburton,...) who have supported it since it began and I am delighted that Pete will now get his name on the Trophy because he has worked towards winning it over several years.
