bought my first headtorch last winter and organised some informal night runs locally, I think the people who took part enjoyed it, will try racing this winter for sure

Good choice Ady. I used this model on the Yoredale 100. Only problem I had was in the fog over Stake Moss - I had to turn it off because the reflective glare was so bright it was making it difficult to see where I was going.

Has anyone else noticed an increase in the number of UFO sightings reported in the local paper after they've been out on a few night runs?

Headless, in clagg, take the torch off your head and keep it hand-held, below waist level - a technique learnt 4 years ago by the Bowland Bats, the first documented regular night fell runs.

I love head torch running but less of this mamby pamby running with others millarky. For the full on scare yourself to death experience, you have to do it on your own, preferably in crap weather, on moonless nights with compulsory run ins with green eyed, skittish cows, mysterious spottings of large black panther like animals, hovering just outside the glow of your torch, and flashbacks to the opening sequence of an american werewolf in london playing on your mind.

No probs Hopey, that price for a brand spanker's not too painful.

I've usually found that coming downhill its easier to hold your head torch in your hand rather than on your head because your head bounces around a bit too much. You usually have to back of slightly coming downhill but otherwise if you know a route fairly well you should be fine just keep your feet high.

Re: Running when it is dark

I like running late evening on my own often finishing in the dark. It doesn't seem quite so dark when it comes gradually as your eyes adjust to it. Also I carry a torch but only switch it when I really need it e.g. trying to find the style as your field of vision is much better without. With a torch you can find yourself looking at you feet all the time especially on rougher ground.
