Sapper sorry to hear about your diagnosis but as in everything in life if you can approach it with a positive frame of mind I am sure it will make a huge difference.
Runners, especially fell runners, tend to be 'up' for challenges and thats what this is, a challenge that, like any challenge can be overcome through, grit, determination, courage and positive thinking.
All the best, keep as positive as possible at all times and beat it.
Sorry to hear your news, but there are plenty of us who have come out the other side. Everyone's experience is different, and none of us in the same boat, so to speak.
It was a bit of a shock when it happened to me, but a year off work for the chemo / radio therapy wasn't anything like as bad as expected (even though I was pretty bloody ill for a while). Take it as it comes and listen to the professional advice.. there's plenty there. As for running, well I was a mountain biker back then and saw running as a mysterious activity, but I was careful to avoid getting covered in crap... I mainly stuck to long walks when I felt up to it.
Good luck and take it as it comes. Your aerobic fitness will stand you in good stead for what's ahead.
a very famous fell runner and cyclist and a dear friend had a random drug test, the results showed some unusual high levels of a certain substance, the tester advised the athlete to get an appointment from his doctor for the local specialist at the hospital.turned out he was in early stages of testicular cancer!to cut a long story short he got through all his treatments/surgery and came back and won several prestigous events, and to cap it all because it was a class a illness was paid out by his endowment policies so paid off his mortgage.this allowed him to take his new found life to greater levels of enjoyment.
no it was not easy for him but the man he was and the man he is now is an inspiration to us all.
i now see a person who lives the life we all apire to,visiting the world doing what he used to dream of.
i will have a word with him and see if he will put some thing on here.
you have a steep mountain to climb but hey, your a fell runner, you can climb the toughest highest rocky mountain with the knowledge that you will not stop to sit down, you may slow down but you will still get to the top and then embrace the run in to complete the challenge.you have travelled this road before, its just the magnitude thats different.
pm me if you want to let off or would like a good moan.
And just to add, see the last edition of the Fellrunner, summer 2008. Pg 52 has a column by Mandy Goth of Todmorden Harriers writing about her cancer experience.
1 in 3 people will get cancer, so the stats say, hope it never happens to my kids. As for me, if i did get it, i hope to be as brave, positive and strong as the people i know who have fought it and won. Thinking and hoping for the best for all those brave souls out there Whether Lance Armstrong used drugs for cycling or not he still beat cancer, after his first TDF win in 1999 he said "Anythings Possible" Stay positive, stay with us

My wife's friend's husband is having his foot off in the morning. Prognosis is shit - C in many organs and bones - how do you cope with that sort of shit?
Hard to think how you'd cope with that sort of shit, mate of mine's brother had his arm off at the shoulder and came back a better person for it. Sadly it came back a few years later and he lost his battle. Who knows how long any of us have got, best make the most of every day
