    4 weeks until a 13 miler.

Right, ive just discovered this local race that’s held near where i live.
Its help by the long distance walkers association but runners are welcome too.
Its 13 miles of undulating multi-terrain and i really want to do it.

The thing is though; ive only ever ran 10 miles before. That was a couple of months ago and im getting fitter and fitter.
Im not bothered about what time i get as long as i get round ok.

Im prob not guna be able to train this week because at the mo my legs feel like they don’t belong to me after my first ever race yesterday - 10k (41:53.)

That only gives me 3 weeks to train for it and increase my current capable mileage by three.

So do you think I’ll be capable or should i wait for next year.
Or should i just go for it and use pure determination to drag myself round.

You should be ok Al. just go off really steady don't try to Race it and get round, I think you will be surprised. Walk the up hills and run when you feel comfortable.

41.53 is a pretty good first 10 k so your fitness is ok, try and get out and do a couple of long slow efforts so you have time on your feet, preferably over similar terrain.

Which race is it? There may be some one who can tell you more about the specific race.

    Good luck

Its called Bottoms Up 26 (or 13)

Yes i know it sounds perverted but its because it goes through a valley called 'Hoghton Bottoms'.

    Its in Hoghton, Preston, Lancashire.

Well done on your 10k time at the weekend Al! 13mls at Bottoms Up sounds an ideal intro to some longer stuff now. If you have a look at the LDWA Events thread or search back for the older All LDWA events one you'll see loads of posts saying how much fun these events are. As Ian says don't try to go too fast or be afraid to walk the uphill bits and you'll love it.

I owuld have thought you'd be ok on that. It's an long distance walkers event so you'll probably need to keep an eye on the directions you have to follow. You may have to walk at times, plus you'll be able to stop at the checkpoints for a bite to eat and a drink.

    Hi Al
it takes 4week for the benifits of a long run to get into your legs, so use this as a training race! enjoy haveing a nice run out, and try not to push yourself to hard untill the last few miles, you could even take a camera and take some pics for us all

Alternatively interval training takes 2weeks for the benifits to kick in, so try and get out and do some hill reps or something simular

4 weeks for the long run and 2 weeks for intervals?

Is this generally accepted to be true?

Im just interested in the effects of training (or lack of in my case)
    Still too heavy to run

    Re: 4 weeks until a 13 miler.

    Ta fellas.
Well i rang the organiser last night and she seemed a really helpful person, she emailed me an entry form and the route, but it is a page writen directions - no map. So i spent ages trying to plot the route out but im a bit unsure of it ata round halfway. So on saturday im guna cycle some of the route as a bit of a recce.

In the actual event i may just tag onto someone whos running at my pace and not bother about the time too much. (I dont actually think theres postioning prizes - just get from start to finish?)

Im looking forward to it but just a bit worried i may get the route wrong, but hey...thats all part of the fun

Yer it is! haha so the weeks before a big event should go as follows in an ideal situation,
    4weeks before:- Long runs
    3weeks:- Intervals and leg strenghening
    2weeks:- Even More intervals
1 to 1 and a half weeks before:- resting and gentle runs to keep the legs turning over comfortably!

This is where you need to work out which event you want to take more seriously so you can prepare well.
