Question: Would Fairfield horseshoe and Holme Moss qualify me for 3peaks ?
From the Three Peaks website:
Entries will be accepted from men and women aged not less than 18 on race day who have either :-
Completed the Three Peaks Race in 2006, 2007 or 2008.
Since Jan 1st 2007 completed at least two different Medium A, Long A or Long B Fell Races. Note – only FRA definitions apply, LDWA events are not accepted.
Runners who do not fulfil either of these requirements but who have endurance running experience should submit details on their entry - listing endurance races completed 2007 and 2008 eg road marathon within 3hrs 20mins.O.M.M. Elite A,B,Class or equivalent.
Overseas competitors must submit full details of experience.
So Fairfield would - it's an AM, not sure about Holme Moss - don't know when it is run and didn't find on a quick scan of the calendar.
Holme Moss is a tough AL Bob run in July. I did PPP this year and ran Kinder Trog and Holme Moss as my qualifiers in 2007.
Poacher turned game-keeper
eg road marathon within 3hrs 20mins
It's probably difficult to relate flat road times to mountainous fell times, but that sounds a bit strict to me. 4 hrs might be nearer the mark. I couldn't get anywhere near 3:20 road marathon time even if my life depended on it, and I've completed 3 Peaks the last two years.
I suppose they're thinking that a good runner with very little hill experience should be good enough and hard enough to cope with owt the PPP can chuck at them if they can run 3.20 for a marathon. I'm a mountaineer with good navigational skills but soooo slow. My club got a group up to try an AM on the North Yorks Moors recently and though some of the lads (and lass) were road/XC specialists they had no trouble coping with typical high up conditions and did excellent times, taking the mud and rocks in their stride. A good runner of any sort should be able to cope with the fells especially when navigation isn't an issue. I agree with the great Ron Hill on this.
"I am not a number! I am a free man!"
And Holme Moss is a beast.
"I am not a number! I am a free man!"
I agree with you about good runners, GD. My point was about the road marathon time requirement being too strict. 4hrs would be good enough, in my humble opinion. Yes, I'm slow as well.
I'm surprised that they are allowing Road Marathon times at all. They only did that for 2008 as the race was fully flagged.
The main reason I think for the AL,AM,BL criteria is to ensure that at least the competitors have some experience of distance on the fells, where navigation skills are required.
I'm no VET of the area, having run the PPP for the first time last year, but with a good chance of fog, even snow, there is every chance of the fell experience coming in to play.
And not many marathon runners have faced Ingleborough after 3 hours + running!
Tour of Pendle is AL and is an accepted qualifier. It was the main race for most of my clubmates last year.
