    July 2007 I contacted Bryan Speight to confirm the entry criteria as a bunch from Blackburn Harriers were looking to take part.
    That's where I was told that they were allowing athletes - for 2008 only - with a solid endurance background such as sub 3:20 marathon runners and only due to the flagging of the route.

    So I assume that it is true - hence my surprise this year.

    The second is also true - I'm sure you can read a map - if you can't you should learn to.
    I did a 7 miler in the Howgills last year and for 75% of the race couldn't see another runner.

    PPP. Hardly need a map for this! Very little of the trail is faint. Am I presuming too much in thinking that anyone wanting to race this will have at least SOME sense of direction?

    Many don't but i wouldn't boast about admitting that you could be a liability on the fells if the mist comes down. If something happens does that mean as you have admitted you don't use a map in races where NS are advised - all insurance cover is off? Should you even be racing certain races.
