Thread: Remembrance Sunday

    Re: Remembrance Sunday

The British Legion provides wonderful support for ex-service people, but takes money from the arms trade, and rather questionably launched this year's poppy appeal in Iraq.
Well let's be honest they are not going to get much support from this Labour government, the way the elderly are treated in this country is a disgrace. They can't even arm the modern soldiers with proper equipment, never mind look after ex soldiers who didn't have any choice but to fight.I just hope this winter is mild so more war veterans don't die from the cold. The thought of them having to even think about whether they can afford to put the heating on is a total disgrace.Never mind as long as the foreigner or the scrounger next door has plenty of money everything will be fine ....don't you just love socialism !

I must admit I have a problem with the "poppy", don't know why it is probably because "if you are seen on TV in the month of November without one then you are showing disrespect to those who fought in the wars".

I was in Germany on holidays this summer and one of the most memorable bits will be on the journey back and visiting the Arnhem Oosterbeek War Cemetery. Tears cold not be held back when seeing all these graves with guys in the 20s dying in September 1944.
I will be up at 7:30 in the morning to get my son over to his Cadet group for the Rememberer day march.

I would hope people would remember and respect those who died.

If that that involves wearing a poppy, that's fine.

However, if the poppy is just stuck on with no thought, as a fashion thing, or because (it seems with tv presenters) everyone else is doing it and it seems to come with almost peer pressure, then that is an empty and useless gesture.

I think the vast majority of people who purchase and wear poppies do so for the right reasons and in good faith. A visit to any war ceremony is always a sobering event. Everyone who has opportunity should go at least once

Yes we visited my great uncles grave at Lapugnoy, the family think that 90 years after he died we were the first to visit his grave.

a big up to the old guy who stood in all weathers for the last 2 weeks outside our local Aldi selling poppies, a big down to the miserable bastards who walked past him without even a hello
