Thread: Fine Whisky Advice?

    Fine Whisky Advice?

I've been roped into doing some market research into high end Whiskies - £25 and upwards a bottle - 70 quid for 2 hours 'work' was too tempting to resist

Having never ventured into anything classier than a Glenfiddich, can anyone provide me with some suitable phrases to come out with when tasting some far classier brands?

I believe 'earthy', 'peaty' and words like that are normally used???

    Many Thanks

    MH

    Yes, like them.

Mrs Hare is worried I'll get the taste for it and blow the 70 quid on a couple bottles for Christmas

Well, Mr Hare, first you have to know the regional differences. If you used peaty or smoky when talking about a Highland, you'd be rumbled straight away!
    Here's my offer.
    Lowland: Insipid
    Highland: Bland
    Islay: Heavenly
    Skye/Orkney: Ambrosia

Island malts can definitely be described as peaty, use your nose and look for hints of vanilla, caramel, liquorice, orange, spice, smoke etc. I am currently after a bottle of 1978 Glenrothes for my 30th birthday next year. Not quite the year I was born but near enough and I am rather partial to a Speyside malt. The only problem is it's £400 a bottle so hopefully the wife really loves me !!!
