Ilkley Harriers did it as a relay earlier this year - http://www.ilkleyharriers.org.uk/new.../dalesway.html

Don't know of a record as such though there probably is.

It's certainly been done in one go loads of times. Do not know the recod time but Dennis Beresford rings a bell. It will be well under 24 hours. Something like 16-17 hours would not surprise me!

Dennis Beresford ran it in 13:46 in August 1983 according to Stud Marks on the Summits, p121.

I stand to be corrected, I do not have any paperwork to hand, but a vague memory that somebody went faster than Dennis, but Dennis then re-took the record.???

Was this on the shorter route? It's got several extensions.

Bob. there was talk of doing this again, but doing a double, Ilkley - Bowness -Ilkley.

Suspect we have the numbers if we could stimulate enough interest.

And of course loonies like you and me can double or treble up.

Alison and I did 4 sections each this year (by choice) logging well over 20 miles a piece. All part of the training.

Great fun too for any other club looking for a not too testing relay event. We went for the "inclusive" approach rather than trying to break any records. You can build in some very short legs for the non-fell runners (Buckden to Kettlewell was one) but leave some harder ones for the hard men and women (Dent to close to Ribblehead).

I'm sure I could locate the leg lay out if anyone was interested.

    Morgan

P.S. The earlier link from Bob's post does give brief details of the legs that were run.

I'd torn the cartilege in my knee when this was done so I'd have been there otherwise - honest!

Not sure of the exact route that Dennis took, but SMOTS refers to it as "the 81-mile Dales Way from Ilkley to Bowness".

Not sure how many of the "options" were available when the record was set.
