    Erosion on the moors

Just came across this article about the erosion and problems facing the moors from the YP. Thought it might interest some of you out there.

I have read somewhere that the burning of the heather is a significant factor in the erosion of the moors becasue without heather holding it together, the peat is very easily washed away ( and I'm not just saying that cos I'm a grouse).

But they burn the heather in order to keep the Grouse. So if they don't burn the heather - no Grouse .
Don't roll with a pig in poo. You get covered in poo and the pig likes it.

Actually, saw one of those nature progs on BBC2 a while back which delt with this topic. Everyone seems to think that "managing" the open land is a new thing. Turns out that we (i.e. mankind) have been tinkering with the environment since Stonehenge times. Without the plantations, tree selection & planting etc etc then you'd have a very different sort of landscape with only a few dominant species.

    Apparently.
