Whats the toughest 3 AM's in the calendar?
Whats the toughest 3 AM's in the calendar?
Half Peris (4500ft in 8.5) works out slightly tougher even than Grisedale
and not much easier is Buttermere Sailbeck (4650ft in 9.5M)
4 am in the morning
Oops not in the FRA calender
Hills and Guinness!
I reckon Carneddau is one of the tougher Welsh ones, but Snowdon must surely rank as there's few races which leave you in such a bad way at the end as it's just so fast and runnable.
Other one would be the Ben, no messing around, straight up, straight down, a killer.
I've not done either Snowdon or the Ben so can't comment on them. Only ever done Peris (see avatar) not the 1/2 so don't know about that either.
Would agree that the Carneddau is good but once that first looooong climb is out the way the rest is not that tough (sorry Iain!).
Grisedale is definitely the toughest AM I've done, from the start to the top of Helvellyn is just relentess - in 2007 and 2008 I was faster at 3 Shires than Grisedale. Would also agree with Buttermere, the climb up Causey Pike is a sod, and Donard Commedagh makes up my top three.

Not an AM - but AL - just - Sedbergh Hills - 6000ft - only 14 mile.
Tried it twice and the terrain certainly got the better of me. I'll be back though.
It's the last down-up-down before checkpoint 4 that's done for me each time.
Can I put in a vote for the Long Mynd Valleys? It's not about how much ascent, it's about where in the race it occurs!!
Agree on Grisedale though...that last climb up to the hole in the wall!!!
Grisedale is tough - made all the more so by the bad weather it seems to attract. And that last climb - how tough is that when your legs are mashed??????
