Thread: Clubs etc.

    Clubs etc.

    Hi,
Can anybody give me a definitive answer about which teams I can run for in the Mary townley relay?
If I was asked to run for my triathlon club could I? Even though I normally run for my running club on the fells. I wouldn’t get in my running clubs’ team, but they are not happy about me running for anybody else and say that its' a first claim/second claim thing.
This issue must also affect the Fell Ponys. What do they do if they are a member of another club?
I’m thinking that it must effect all sorts of people. What about people like Mark Hartell etc running ultra marathons for Vasque, when they’re members of Macc Harriers?
Does everybody make there own rules up?

Everybody does make there own rules up it seems.

In races like the Mary Townley - quite a few athletes are seen running for their 2nd claim.

I think the organisers and other athletes generally would not bother.

But if someone does object, the team may get disqualified - unlikely though.

Curious. Has a team ever been disqualified in these circumstances?

why is your club "not happy"?
if you're good enough to get into their main team, why didn't they pick you, and if not why do they care?

and re disqualification - if I were the race organiser, and a club asked me to disqualify another team on those grounds, I know exactly what I would say...

[this is exactly the sort of thing that puts me off ever joining a "proper" club]

It's this sort of issue that puts me off from joining a club.

    Re: Clubs etc.

Before you all go off on one - these clubs that most of you are objecting to, put on most of the events that you guys are taking part in.

Secondly, they also put most of the money raised back in to athlete development.

We for example, make grants to young athletes to support them in attending events here or overseas, and buying specialist equipment.
We also support those "stewed ants" that are living away from the club, so that they can come back and take part in events with us, without being hit too much in the pocket.
We also pay most of the entry fees for our members such as the 2 teams we have entered for the Pennine Bridleway Relay - OPen teams with 20 slots.

We chose to operate those slots on a first come first served basis and then pick the best 2 teams from those first 20 to come forward.

Fair enough I think you will say.

So clubs are the cornerstone of athletics, and you shouldn't dismiss them in the way that you do.

These rules are there to stop indiscriminate mercenaries from running around from club to club to pick up pots and not insignificant sums of prize money that may be available.

    Re: Clubs etc.

UKA rules on these things used to state that you can't compete for your 2nd claim club in an team event or league where your 1st claim club is also competing. Dont know if that's still the case, but it sounds like it. It caused us some problems in cross country events a few years ago.
I think its the possibilty that you may take places or points off your 1st claim team that is the issue, though as you explain it looks unlikely you will do that.
I find it difficult to imagine how anyone would want to deny you getting a run in those circumstances. Have a word with someone on your club committee to see if you definitely can't run.

    Re: Clubs etc.

I think most people would agree with you Witton on the value of running clubs. And you're right that there should be rules to stop elite runners from behaving like mercenaries in the way you describe. But what reason would be there for Club A preventing somebody from running for another club second claim in an event if they had deemed them not good enough to run for their own team? As Daz said, why should they care?
