    Race times?

    Another question, sorry.
Been running for several years but I've not entered a fell race (yet). I'm not a very fast runner, and was wondering what times one (female) would be expected to get (not to win, just to not look utterly stupid) on say, a 7.5 1000' ascent race? Don't want to be out of my depth...

I'm well aware that depends on terrain/weather etc etc but all the same...? Cheers

    Well...couple of things...

Firstly, to answer your question directly, 10 minute mile-ing (sic?) on 7.5/1000ft would put you well up the field and absolutely no where near the back.

But to answer the question you haven't asked...YES! Get yourself along to a fell race! I'd suggest a BM category race (mid distance, not too severe in climbing...the Short category races do tend to be a bit quick!) to start with. You'll love it!

There's a completely different atmosphere at a fell race to say a road race. Everyone is friendly and the person who crosses the finishing line the latest is equally as respected as those who have the quickest time! And I'm quite sure you'll be no where near last!
...there's a hill nearby missing its fool...

My first fell race was 3 miles / just under 800' in 27 minutes (9 minutes miles) at the time I was doing 5ks at sub 6 pace, however your example shouldn't add so much to your road pace.
Hoping for a far more successful 2009

Most of the time i'm too busy looking at the view or chatting during races to worry about my finishing position! Have fun!
