305 is a neater shape and people say it has better sat reception than the 301. Both have a USB interface which makes them infinitely better than the 201 but do you need navigational functionality? These wrist watch type GPS units have virtually nothing to do with navigation and the best they can do is to let you follow a route back the same way you went out on.

I plumped for a 301 cos i didn't want to get freaked out by what's going on with my heart rate , and I love it just for the measuring distance which it is very good at.............. if you can afford it get one or better still run with a
    designated garmin wearer

THe 305's got much better satellite reception and is wel worth the extra dosh! I previously had a 201 and my 305's miles ahead in terms of accuracy and signal retention etc. It's got lots of new training feature as well.

    Cheers,

    Derek.

Does the 205/305 give a figure for total ascent per run? (The 201/301 does not).

The 301 will give Ascents on the software when downloaded to PC.

Deeko is right, I'va had both the 201 and 305 and the 305 is much better (perfect actually) for holding the signal, e.g. in forests and woods.

None of them give total ascent, you have to plug them in the PC to do that. Then you need to treat it with a pinch of salt. My morning run today was 3000' acccording to Garmin and 2200' according to Sportracks. I believe the latter.

HRM is worth having. For example for this morning's run it told me my av HR (148), and time in each zone (e.g. 7.6 miles @ 60-70% effort, 8.1 miles @ 70-80% max HR). It also shows you HR vs ascent/pace graph in the software.

The 201/301 are more comfortable on the wrist than the 05's, which can be a bit hard. I've got use to it now.

The two watches look totally different.
