I find the fact of a sixty year old running a marathon in 2.36 impressive but not at all surprising. I am surprised that the record is so slow. Steve James an aquaintance of mine now living in Blackpool won't have been far off an achievement like that.

I think we have very little understanding of athletic performances that can be achieved by people of all ages.

We recognise our own limitations and fail to consider what extra-ordinary people can do - or in the case of the awful Christopher Leigh we think anyone better than ourselves must be cheating.

He kind of backs up my theory that everyone has x number of miles / years running in their legs. After that you're knackered and injury prone. He didn't start running until later in life and is still running well now because of that.

I reckon I have run a few times round the world so to speak since I ran a marathon in 1976 and won an English championship bronze medal in 2008.

That doesn't seem to me to be the point of the thread though, Pinno. Two thirty six is an achievement for anyone in a marathon. What I am surprised about is that it is a world record and it is so slow. I think the people who post falls into a trap of self - limited expectations. I know who the main culprit is but even without Christopher Leigh the expectations are incredibly low.
