Without any reference I will stab a guess at Mr Holmes........
Stagger, if you had taken in anything from MR BREEZE's articles (apart from the infatuation with Sarah Rowell's book) it must be surely that
a) there we much fewer races in times gone by
b) therefore you had more top quality fields
c) therefore people generally won less races
Ergo, while this thread is a nice idea, I can probably answer very quickly that the answer will ultimately be 'No'- the best have not won the most races.
So I could be right saying Ian Holmes given the high # of races 'these days'??
That my fellrunning friend is where we must differ.
I feel that winning the most and performing at top level over a long number of years equals the best.
Quality has always been there, just the amount that alters.
True success can only be on wins or possibly the win percentage per races entered.
Fitness can't be stored. It must be earned over and over, indefinitely.
