    Lakes 24 hour record

Interesting story popped up in my rss reader a couple of days ago. Suprised it is not up here already.

Steve Birkinshaw is attempting to break the lakes 24 hour record!

Be interesting to see how he does in this! I reckon I may try to co-incide a visit to the lakes with this to see how he does.

    Good luck with it!

Good luck to 'im. If I can i might try to make it up there to cheer him on.

He say's he's following Mark Hartell's 1997 schedule: anyone know where I can find this to pick a spot to spectate from (and importantly, be there at the same time he's likely to go flying past!)??

    That is good news.

It's high time one of the hard men of long distance endeavour took this record on.

Best of luck to Steve if and when he treads the start line.

Thanks for the encouragement. Going for the record is quite daunting but I am running strongly and the training is going well. I have really enjoyed going up the additional fells not on the BG over the winter and trying to find the fastest lines.

Best of luck, it is a mighty challenge.
Have you worked out the fastest way down from Blencathra? If not I might be able help take minutes off Mark Hartell's 21 minute descent.

I have timed myself on 5 different routes off Blencathra, My current fastest is straight down the scree to the right of the Halls Fell ridge and then contour back onto Halls Fell. I think I read that your favourite was down Middle Tongue, I have tried a couple of routes that way but both times it seemed quite slow at the bottom, maybe i have not found the right line yet. Any suggestions of ways to take off a few minutes would great.
