i am soon to be leaving the Dark Side of the country and heading north of the border to take up a post in Edinburgh

    therefore the obvious question is:

what running club to join in with for some training

Carnethy, Penicuik Harriers, Edinburgh AC, Edinburgh Woolen Mill

Carnethy looks like a good set up to me, they train on most days according to the website, so definitley plenty to go at.
    Up the mighty Wharfedale 'arriers!

    Re: Edinburgh Clubs

There are 3 clubs that traditionally have good representation on the hills

    by reputation...

Carnethy - the older man's choice - they get everywhere, do anything
HBT - the (serious) drinking man's choice - they drink anywhere, drink everything.
Lothian - the other choice - they appear here and there (getting a bit thin on the ground, heavy base in Livingston).

    Other other choices, further afield
In Peebles - Moorfoot have decent turn out at hill races.
In Haddington - HELP a few hill runner, including Brian Marshall.
In Fife - Fife AC good turn out at hill races.
In Stirling - Ochils primarily a hill running club.

the other Edinburgh clubs don't turn out much for the hills.

Training in Edinburgh can be quite open / fluid with various groups not necessarily club based holding sessions, the classic amongst these is Tuesday intervals on the Meadows.
University clubs and orienteering clubs do a fair few terrain and hill sessions too

    Re: Edinburgh Clubs

I think Andy has pretty much nailed it (not to mention put the clubs in the right order )
A few other things worth mentioning. Depending on where you'll be working we've got a lunchtime group hill run every Monday over Arthurs Seat (including part of the World Trophy route no less). It's open to all-comers and kicks off at 12:30 opposite the Holyrood Palace car park. Just look for the odd looking bunch. Most weeks it's a social affair but about once a month there's a wee handicap run to spice things up. It's about a 10 minute jog from most parts of the city centre so if you're not limited to an hour for lunch well worth the effort.

There's another lunchtime session every tuesday, this time it's intervals on the grass around inverleith park. Again meet up at 12:30 and aim for the obelisk in the centre.

Both these sessions cater for and are attended by runners of all abilities.

Finally if you are interested in the SHR champs series (especially if you're thinking of joining club number 1 in Andy's list ) worth noting that Stuc a chroin is a scottish and british counter and although you'd have missed screel and clachnaben by that point you could still complete the series as we're still 4 from 6 up here.

Worth checking out the websites. Go to www.shr.uk.com and click on the links tabs

    Thanks again

will be based at heriot watt...so a bit outside the city...so lunchtimes may be a bit of a difficult one

however..much to consider from the good advice given

am looking forward to running over arthurs seat and trying the seemingly popular meadows sessions ?

Darren, give me a ring and I will give you a contact for Carnethy. Ex?? Dark Peak I believe. Just to have an informative chat.
Met a few Carnethy lads and lassies and they are a very amiable bunch.
I know absolutely nowt about the other clubs so am not giving a definitive spot of advice.
