    Tony Benn

Just been to hear him speak tonight - the man is awesome - 83 yrs old, does 20 mins of chat and then an hour plus of questions from the audience - no warning as to what they are, and he was just so lucid, passionate but rational!

Best line - " would we have been so keen to shout 'Maggie Maggie Maggie Out Out Out' if we'd have known it was to be replaced with 'Tony Tony Tony In In In'!

The compere suggested at the end that 20 years ago we wouldn't have been there to hear TB or if we had, we'd have thought 'dangerous leftie' and now we give him a standing ovation - so who's changed- it's not Tony Benn!

I like Maggie and Tony Benn - you believe that what they are doing is with conviction and not for popularity or self-interest - even if you do not agree with them.
I used to like Skinner as well until he changed in to a poodle. I would really have expected him to be this governments sternest critic - all he does is take cheap shots at the opposition.

I agree with that completely. I don't share many of his views at all but you would travel to hear him speak - a brilliant communicator. I used to love watching Question Time when he was on. He is definitely a politician of the past. These days politicians are too scared to say what they really think for fear of making a gaffe that will be seized upon. All they do is offer up a bland sound byte.

Tony Benn, is one of the most overrated British politicians there has ever been!

His record in high office was sh*te and he has spent the rest of his political life, talking in endless Marxist clichés, and deliberately setting himself up as a hero of the Left because he never had the talent to do anything else!

The man is a hypocritical left-wing dinosaur who has kept a childish grip on discredited idealism, because he knew he would never have to actually live under that type of regime and because he couldn't make a name for himself any other way. Whilst, all the time, sitting on vast inherited wealth.

I went off him when i saw him being interviewed on TV a few years back.

He'd been coming out with his usual b*llocks about being an anti-establishment youth loving rebel etc and the interviewer brought up how he wrecked the Pirate radio stations in the '60s, when he was Post Master General, and that wasn't the act of an anti-establishment figure, Benn started hyper-ventilating and shouting down the interviewer, it was a bit pathetic to be honest.

Rhetoric is easy. Government is harder.

This is the man who's most significant contribution in government was to introduce the second class post.
