Thread: 42 Tarns?

    Smile 42 Tarns?

Having a schizoid obession to either do, ignore, the BG (after a few painful unsuccessful attempts) and inspired by the recent flurry of books on wild swimming, and noting the previous rounds in the 80's of lakeland meres, lakes etc I wonder if anyone else has thought of a round of say 24 or even 42 tarns (there are reasonable lines to get as many if one includes many of the smaller tarns) with the important added criteria that each one is swum in! Of course a winter round may be tricky / deadly and how one defines swimming would need debate (over several pints of beer and many forum posts) but 10 strokes of front crawl or breast stroke could be used. Alternatively given the wild, anarchic and zen like philosophy of wild swimming prehaps the swim should just be peaceful and non-defined! Not sure if this idea is too crazy or even possible but it would at least make an intersting new challenge (or maybe I should do the BG and try and regain some sanity, though most would say its too late for either now!).
    One more lap!

I've not tried it but swimming in the true sense might be a tad difficult in the smallest tarn in the Lakes.

In the same vicinity, there is the Lakes, Meres and Waters run. The record has stood since 1983.

Billed at 105 miles with 17,000 feet of climbing, the record went from 35.5 hours (Leo Pollard) to 25.17 (Alan Heaton) to 17.14 (Joss Naylor).

    Running order I believe is:

    Loweswater
    Crummock Water
    Ennerdale Water
    Wastwater
    Devoke Water
    Goat's Water
    Low Water
    Leverswater
    Coniston
    Esthwaite Water
    Elterwater
    Grasmere
    Rydal Water
    Windermere
    Skeggles Water
    Small Water
    Blea Water
    Haweswater
    Hayeswater
    Brotherswater
    Ullswater
    Thirlmere
    Derwentwater
    Bassentwaite Lake
    Overwater

No swimming required as far as I recall.

Surely you have at least to dip a toe in the water.
