when i go on my little fell running breaks in summer to yorkshire, i wanted to alternate where one day i run one day cycle. I have no bike and know nothing about mountain bikes. I'm not wanting to off road as such, but i do want a fairly ok one which can take a little punishment (mainly me falling off it)

when i say not off roading, i mean on actual mountains, i will do trail etc. Racing bikes are not so good for me, i have a terrible habit of buckling wheels. Who knows, in future, may do some serious stuff but for now, just fun

I'd look at a cyclocross bike rather than a mountain bike in that case.

I was going to suggest a £400-600 hardtail. They're all such good value nowadays and you'll get front suspension and disc brakes for that. Bike companies change models in, iirc, August and shops sell-off previous year's models with a discount
