    Scottish Islands

I've just booked a place in the Trossachs for a week in August and want to spend another week on a scottish island. I need to take into account the needs of the family (short travel distance from Trossachs, beaches and somewhere to get ice creams and cream teas!!).

Anyone any recommendations for somewhere that can combine these with good running? From what I've seen Arran looks a strong contender....

From memory Arran doesn't have many good beaches - I may be wrong though. Mull would be another option, some good beaches out beyond Tobermory, Sea Eagles, otters and lots of other stuff to see as well.

We were thinking of Mull - the kids are keen on Tobermory (as its Ballamory!), but Ben Hope aside, much further south, there didn't seem much in the way of hills to run in the Tobermory area...

The kids only need enough sand to build sandcastles - I'm hoping for a lot more in the way of hills I can get to quickly from the cottage!

Arran - only been there once - about 10 years ago - had a wonderful time, helped by the best weather ever - nice beaches north of Corrie if you like wild, pebbles etc - don't recall much sand?

No good beaches on Arran - I take it you've not been to Blackwaterfoot beach on the West Coast !!
I spend several weeks a year on Arran, will retire there one day

Have you been to the islands before in August?
Just wondered... and don't want to be a spoilsport but... just pray for a constant stiff breeze by the way.

'Avon skin-so-soft' sells by the bucketload up there for the very same reason. Virtually everyone I know in Arran has huge supplies - Avon reps there are certainly not suffering in this credit crunch.

A good point here, don't forget your mosquito net, and a batch of Avon skin so soft!

Mull is fantastic for running, the hills a great.theres a nice loop which takes in about three hills (cant remember their names) just on the coast by the ferry port from Oban.it saves a bus trip to the other side of the island to do Ben more(which is good too)
