    Talking My legs are revolting

What with running the high peak marathon the weekend before last, the fair amount of long hill run training leading up to it and then running a 20 miler in the hills on Sunday just gone, my legs chose to go all soft and southern on me while running yesterday morning. It was an early start, relatively fast 13 mile run to work and, although I made it okay, the last 4 miles didn't feel that comfortable. In fact it wasn't my legs per se that let me down - I sort of came over all weary more than anything.

As luck would have it I'm not running this weekend anyway (drinking instead) and the rest will probably sort me out. I don't read runners magazines (other than the fellrunner) but whenever I've browsed them in Smiths I'm sure I've seen articles about recovery after marathons and whatnot. Am I normal? Or am I just losing it?

Sounds like you've come over all soft and southern (and I should know!). Think you need to give your legs a good talking to.

Don't worry Stolly it's normal! I ran last night and even though my legs had stopped hurting from Saturday's Hobble after 45mins or so they felt like lead. If you look at road marathon training schedules it's normal to have two weeks off afterwards, resting and eating etc. Enjoy some time off then get ready for the Fellsman

If I've had a couple of hard weeks close together with high mileage the I usually find I need to take it a bit easier on the third. Running two races in close succession to each other is great training for endurance but your rest is as important. I even took two days off the other week when I started getting feverish and sweating all night.

Thats a good point. Normally I don't run very first thing (this run started at 6:30 am) and I'd usually have a lucozade before a 13 miler (but couldn't face it at that time of morning). I'd had a bowl of muesli and a cup of tea though and that's usually enough on my normal runs of that sort of distance - I guess the lucozade before hand or some sweets en route would have come in useful. Maybe that was the problem.

Don't you eat owt else on the IOM then?

Could well be food intake. This time last year was running a shed load more than than I am now and I did see if I could get by with eating less than usual. Pounds came off, performances OK, but by the time I got into last June I was pretty pooped. Am not being so fussy about the food intake this year!
