    Top male fell/mountain runner?

OK I'm interested to see who people think has been the best runner of this generation and I'm narrowing it down to two - Billy Burns and Ian Holmes.

With the greatest respect to other leading runners both stand supreme as having the best records in mountain and fell racing respectively (argue against that if you will...) but as the two disciplines are so different (or are they?) and the two men barely ever race each other, can they be compared?

I await your votes with interest!

but they are not of the same generation,
as evidenced by the fact that they have hardly ever raced against each other.
and comapring between generations is pointless, there is no basis for comparison.
You could quote records, but these depend on the competitive environment of the era.

Billy has laid down an incredible list of achievements.
    So has Ian

    leave it at that.

why the need to decide any one person is "the greatest" ?

It would be "the greater", not "the greatest", if there's only a choice of two...

Why? Well I would agree 110% that the need to save the rain forest or the issue of world peace is far more important than the question I am asking.

But in the spirit of this forum WHY NOT? Take a chill pill!

but surely there will be a long list of people arguing one way or t'other, which isn't very relaxing for a Friday afternoon.
Isn't both, or indeed many, a more chilled outcome ?

I suppose so. Hopefully they'll all just vote rather than argue

reading the artical in the fell runner about billy is unbelivble he has won races all over the world and i would say he is more a mountain runner than a fell runner as he lives in the mountains. ian on the other hand has run more fell races (has run some mountain races but not to the level of billy) he has been very succsessful on the fells in this country as where billy has bin more world orinentaited ie run all over the world.
I ran and ran until my Muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid, ....And then i ran some more.

Absolutely that's why I set up the poll. Not for people to argue and fall out over lol but to see people's perspectives. Some may think Billy's achievements are better because he's done more on the world stage, others may say fell running is a different discipline that doesn't really have a 'world' stage so Ian has done it all.

I personally sit on the fence (the poll starter cannot vote is my unofficial rule / excuse ) but yeah people's perceptions of the diversity within our sport(s) has always fascinated me.

Anyone asked Ian and Billy their views? What's the betting they'd vote for each other?
