    Today's wind up

My second favourite charity at it here.

Seriously ill informed, as most stuff about wind power is - rely on renewables for more than 20% of your lekky and due to intemittency the lights will go out

    I love this windfarm story.

Build loads of wind farms to save the planet for future generations.

Ignore the argument about whether they generate enough electricity - consistently - to effectively overlook the carbon involved in producing the enormous metal and plastic constructions. (Let's not mention the percentage that actually operate and generate electricity at any one time)

Turn the country's most beautiful scenery into a scene from Teletubbies!! Brilliant!

So much for preserving the planet.

Nuclear power's the way forward my friends.

The RSPB are interested in birds and nowt else IMHO

Also - the report they talk about cites the high levels of renewables used by other european countries. They one they all love is Denmark who cranks up nearly 30pc of its energy from wind (it also has the largest pig population!) but er.........where does all that energy go?

    http://www.thomastelford.com/journal...N.158.2.66.pdf

The dangers of the RSPB and others punting the idea of renewables as being an easy answer and the main problem being climate change is that such arguments are not only shaky but that the real alarm should be over diminishing energy resources.

    Re: Today's wind up

Wind turbines won't lead to a single coal/gas/nuclear driven power station being decommissioned.
Wind power went out of favour at the turn of the industrial revolution because it was too inconsistent - a lesson there perhaps??

However wind turbines are a highly visible method of demonstrating that the government/power companies are doing everything they can to prevent power shortages and global warming.

Yeah but the various lobby groups that look after their own patch of environmentalism are all pushing the same agenda, without truly considering or understanding the practicalities or limitations involved.

I'm a bit of a petrolhead myself, but not an extreme, blinkered Clarkson-a-like. I am concerned with man's long-term impact on the planet, the depletion of fossil fuels (particularly the economic and social disaster that will ensue if it starts to run dry and we're totally unprepared for it). I've just yet to be convinced that a load of ugly windmills, which in reality generate very little energy for the effort involved - all over the prettiest parts of the country is the best way forward.

There is a social concern to all this, but there is also a bit of selfishness too: I want the planet to look nice as long as I'm around, and for there to be enough fuel to put in my exotic sports car(s) when I can finally afford to buy it/them!!
