How do you improve your stamina and speed for fell running.
Run uphill. Lots.
Seriously: as much time on the hills as possible for stamina. Speedwork - e.g. hill sprints - for, well, speed, obviously!

I wish is was easier
well for running in general, it's getting a good mix of speed runs and stamina runs, isn't it
one very long run a week, one medium, and a couple of short fast ones is how I work it
but then I'm not really a fell-runner, yet
I'm a bit knackered for hills round here, but there's a sandy horse galllop with an uphill stretch that does a job, and my office has a seven-storey stairwell ...
Stop running on roads for a start richard!!!
If you have any fields with footpaths going through them, train on them.
Before my knees started being fools, i did 100% of my training on the muddy fields and i reakon thats pretty good at training for fells. It isnt as good as running up and down mountains themselfs but its the nearest thing to it. Plus you get nice and muddy which is the best bit about it.
Or, watch the recce threads and tag along to them.
being able to run uphill with out stopping is a key factor. usally on the short lakeland classics wasdale head show, conistone gullies, grasmere ect the race is won basically with the first person to the top, not all the time but most being able to open up a lead on a hill and then being able to run down aswell.
you could be 10 secs ahead to the top but by the bottom you can be about 30secs ahead. start doing hill reps this will give you strength for climbs
I ran and ran until my Muscles burned and my veins pumped battery acid, ....And then i ran some more.
