I think he is giving good advice.
Out of the 3 miles 2.5 will be on tarmac, stone/hard core paths or hard surfaces.

But if you want to be a fell runner wear fell shoes and an old sweaty t-shirt. Don't forget you should be carrying a bum bag, but what will yours contain???
