RR - if this is you who wants this advice not a clever password stealing girlfriend-
if you go out of your way to buy her a present she will think you have done something wrong.
If you have done something wrong and she is a material girl buy her something she wants and can show off to her friends.
If you have done nothing wrong and just want to buy her somethign nice - buy her something that you may come across during your normal working day cos this shows that you were thinking about her during the day and bought her something just because you saw it - spontaneous like.

Absolutely! The gesture is more important than the the thing. However if the thing itself gives the impression that you dont care and cant be bothered or are just concerned about doing things on the cheap...well that is significant...The emphasis you place on material things depends on how mercenary you are.
