Just finished watching the last hour I V+d last night. Don't make 'em like that any more: well crafted, suspenseful, intelligent...(obviously the source material helps).

Nowadays it'll be all loud bangs, explosions, car chases, improbable 'extreme' sports moves, and an American attached to the French Police who saves the day. No doubt from an assassin who looks generically Middle Eastern.

Star Trek. Believe the hype (for once). A balls-out fantastic fantasy ride from start to finish, with one glaring exception. Is it just me or is the whole simon pegg/scotty/engine room thing a cringe-making embarrassment? It very nearly ruined the whole movie for me but fortunately the rest is gasp-making brilliance. The Kirk/Spock dynamic? Brilliant! Uhura/Checkov/Sulu? Fab! Capt Pike? A very well wrought re-introduction. Of course, the effects are top notch but that has become expected these days. It is the work put into characterisation, script and lighting that puts this one above a very high bar of expectation.

Go see it in the multiplex.
