Bolts on Broad Stand

Pillar rock is just another spot where bolts have no place. It has nothing to do with reputation, or whether Julia Cadbury has been on it, just tradition and ethics. Bolting these pieces of rock does nothing to reduce their reputation to non climbers and climbers alike as you still need the skills to make use of the metal.

True, bolts cannot reduce the technical standard of a climb (unless you stand on 'em!). However, they can make some climbs psychologically easier by making consequences of a leader fall less severe.

There's been no mention of the bolts on Pillar rock on here, that appeared sometime after those on Broadstand.

Has anybody actually confirmed that it's a BG'er that bolted it??

As far as I am aware no-one has admitted (ir)responsibility as yet.

There was just a question asked by a local climber and shop owner if the fell running community knew anything about it. For a while it looked as if an army BG relay team were behind it but they came forward to state that the bolts were already there when they put a caving ladder and ropes in place.

The bolts on BS were (and are) unnecessary since there are two valid alternatives (though admittedly Lord's Rake is a bit unstable these days) that take little if any extra time. Broad Stand is something of a bottleneck and if there is a slow or incompetent party there then any time advantage is lost. Walkers are unlikely, unwilling even, to carry equipment to use the bolts to cross just a few metres of ground.
