    Re: Race Etiquette

Unlike say track running, fell running has lots of ups and downs and rough ground, so there's more passing taking place. If the runner in front insists on taking the racing line regardless, then theres a chance of the passing runner getting injured, or the slower runner suddenly getting collided with. A bit of courtesy and communication makes sense, and there's no point in holding up a faster runner.

Being a fat lad with flappy feet, people seem quite keen to get out the way on my out of control descents!

I always seem to be the tow-er, not the tow-ee. Must learn to slow down, force people past, then get myself a tow.

Just remember that "the runner in front" must have been faster to that point of the race, so there should be no reason to step aside.

Ah, the tortoise and the hare.

If I see a defile ahead I try to get there first, if you are going to pass me you will need to do it the hard way
Frequent but moderate workouts on a consistent basis are the key to success

But when i want to pass someone, you've just got to go for it and fling yourself in the heather, hope you stay upright and pass them.
    Yep. What he says.

or pick a race with lots of route choice then you can hang back while they go one way you can take a sneaky line to pass them

I don't think I've ever been faced with this problem.

Having been overtaken on many occasions, and still feeling a bit inadequate on the fells, if someone were to ask to pass, I would probably apologise, bow, scrape, tug forelock, and if needs be lay down my t-shirt over a particularly boggy bit.

That's not what Rob Jebb thought when I got in his way at Grasmere one year!

    Wink Re: Race Etiquette

I don't find this issue a problem except when you get some numpty behind who makes an arse of themselves by trying to overtake in an obviously inappropriate place. This will often result in contact being made so after the third or so attempt to pass I inadvertently lose all control of my elbows and will also gob into the air in an apparently random fashion but really having taken wind direction, trajectories, distance of miscreant behind me etc into account thereby succeeding in covering said arse in spittle.

Nah I'm only kidding you on - I just stick a leg out most times.
