The only real climb is after about a mile. Apart from that it is basically a cross country course with a stretch of road in the middle. There are a couple of stream crossings to add a bit of interest. The last couple of miles can be pretty muddy.
This was my first ever fell race. I think it's a fantastic race.
As already said, it's really a tough cross country, with just one real hill, but it's long enough to be a really good workout. The "stream" crossings can be a bit more than streams if the weather's been wet in the week beforehand. I remember a long run in across two or three fields before hitting the final road section.
There used to be a hosepipe of hot water provided at the finish. It's quite a good spectator race because as well as seeing the start and finish, there's a bridge just a short distance from the start where spectators can watch the runners coming through one of the stream crossings. And you can get good coffee and a pint in the village pub afterwards.
if I can't see blencathra it's raining
if I can see blencathra it's going to rain
I've got this race pencilled in, it was my second fell race last year so i'll be trying to smash my previous time I remember the last mile or so being a tough slog through the fields!
Very roughly:
A mile across muddy fields (and a beck) to the biggest climb through long grass, fast long descent on grass, a bit of road, back through the beck (see Ali's avatar) across some more fields, about a mile on road then up a muddy bridle way, cross a road then battle through mud of ever increasing depth to another road. Cross this and run through more muddy fields with the road just to your side before a final bit of road to the finish.
I'm sure I've forgotten something...
Ah yes, it's muddy
I should be there.
I like jumping in muddy puddles.
Does my bum look big in this?
The last mile or so when you are going ankle deep in mud and into a 40mph headwind are a tad strength sapping..
Talk about going nowhere fast.
I'll be there and it looks like the weather should make it a chellenge this year (if you believe the weather men!) - wind, rain and so the last stream crossing should be about knee deep and the last 2 field (about 2miles) even more draining. Nice tin bath a hose to finnish - nice warm water they tell me!
Full detail and photos if anyone is interested
