    Maps for running

I've not quite figured this one out. For Lakes races I get the Pete Bland ones.

I'm clever enough to photocopy the relevant section of the OS map - but then what do you do with that? Sticking it in a zip-lock bag isn't much good - on a bad day in the Lakes it'll be in bits within 30 mins.

So what do people do? Sticky-back plastic?

Laminating is usually the best way, you can seal up a poly pocket with sellotape but its not that great.

Laminating is generally too stiff - If you're careful the poly pocket (or similar) sealed with sellotape is generally easier to roll (for your bumbag) and does stand up to all but the worst running weather - I also use this method for routes when I'm caving. No real problems.

Medium size sandwich bag from tesco; works fine!

Nevr had to use a race map during a race anyway; always have plenty of people to follow

The things you pick up when you've got children / daughters... the other day I astounded everyone at work when the only bloke in the room...me... was only the second person to know what a paddle brush was!

I use an Ortlieb map case, & usually hold it in my hand for the whole race. Waterproof & I keep my compass in there too so I don't lose it. If I have a momentary loss of confidence in the route I can refer to the map immediately while I'm still moving, which often saves time, & it means that when I am in doubt I'm less likely to get lazy and guess.

Mainly trail races, so I often need to do a bit of routefinding. Ortlieb cases last for years & stay waterproof as long as you keep them away from brambles.

Print out a copy of race route with notes/bearings etc then use sticky back plastic.
After the race correct or add notes to map and file away till next year.

you see, I carry my map in one of these for races and it keeps the sweat off - but if you really have to consult it properly in bad weather, this won't wash will it? i mean you'll have to get the map out of the bag for starters.

So Splatcher - I take it these Ortlieb cases are not the clumpy mapcases that whip you in the face, which I'm used to from walking?

sticky-back plastic seems right to me, cos it's not as stiff as that laminate stuff

thing is, when I'm up in the Lakes now, even I'm just walking, it'll be v lightweight and I'll probably jog round - so I want a way of having a few weatherproof pocket maps ...
