    Arthroscopy

After MRI scan, consultant says I've got some bits of cartilidge to remove from knee and has discovered old tear in a.c.ligament. Now going to do an arthroscopy to sort things out in two weeks time (got a cancellation). He seemed optimistic about getting back to hills again. Any thoughts from anyone about getting back to fell running after this op? Had arthroscopy on other knee 25 years ago and don't remember what I did after that!

    Re: Arthroscopy

I went in for a similar op back in 2007. Found out I had no ACL which came as a bit of a surprise and hadnt had one for a good number of years or so the surgeon said! Have very little catilage left in the knee now and had developed a hole in the upper knee bone.

Anyhoooo, get back running again after 3 months and knee doesnt feel too bad these days.

Thing is not to rush back......build up the quads to take the strain off the knee and take up the POSE method of running to save your joints!!
If you cant change something, change the way you feel about it !

    Re: Arthroscopy

I had one back at the end of Feb. Simple cartilage tidy up plus knackered bit to back of knee cap they couldn't do owt with. Wasn't allowed to run or bike til 6 weeks post op. Started doing a lot of walking about 4 weeks post op then started gentle jogging as soon as allowed. Knee felt fine running but the bike took longer. I got back really quick just much slower as had lost loads of fitness during long lay off. Have now got knackered ankle from falling off mtn bike

Good luck with your op, if its nice n straightforward you'll be back in no time

I have just been given a date of the 2nd September for mine.
23 weeks since I did the damage

Thanks for advice. Op scheduled for 28th August. Went for pre op yesterday. Now 21 weeks since injury, Stagger, still can't believe I'll ever get back to hills properly. Think I'll be very worried about charging downhill like I used to (mind you, I was never very good at it anyway!).

Here are a couple of interesting webpages Pete.

I am now targeting early next year for my first race. What about you?

    Re: Arthroscopy

Thanks RF, good advice and exactly what I was thinking. I'm also going to look for a consultant who does have an interest in running and knee injuries. Mine was great for the surgery, but really doesn't understand nor want to understand my need to run.

Will now slowly start to build back up again, aiming for Wrekin next March, which was where I damaged knee last year. Anyone know how Stagger is getting on?

    Re: Arthroscopy

How's everyone doing a year on?

I've just had an MRI scan that showed up a torn meniscus and have been referred for arthroscopy. The case histories on these forums are much less scary than those on UKClimbing!

So what's the general prognosis? How long until back to hill walking (I assume running takes a lot longer)?

I'm trying to work out when to schedule the operation in - I'm assuming the OMM will be out regardless, but I've got 2 weeks climbing booked in November, and a week hill walking between Xmas and New Year
