Excellent, traditional, low key Lakeland field day cum agricultural / horticultural show. Ran the longer race a couple of years ago - mostly on 'Land Rover' tracks across open moor / fell to the S of Grisedale Forest.
Route is exceptionally well flagged - fence posts with brightly coloured plastic lids ( from sheep & cattle lick buckets ) nailed to them.
The shorter race ( after the 'long' has finished ) is what used to be the professional 'guides' race; it uses some very steep but grassy fields adjacent to the showfield. The best runner in our club often wins both races, but is more chuffed with winning the 'short' and getting his name on the trophy alongside Kenny Stuart's:thumbup:
Give yourself plenty of time to get there. If you are not familiar with the area, the venue is rather hidden away, off the beaten track, along some narrow, gated lanes.

Unfortunately the weather today was awful, infact it was bloody horrendous. But full marks to the hardy Rusland locals, they got waterproofed up and let the show commence. Farmers towing cars off the field, wrestlers grappling in the rain and kids of all ages running against the elements.
The show also hosts two senior fell races, a 5 miler and then a short guides race soon after. Good turnout for the 5 miler, approx 50 runners. Then only 11 of us hung around drenched to the skin for the steep shorty. Lovely as always, to see Mr/Mrs Amex digging in and doing both races. All agreed this is a belting little show, such a pity about the weather.

As you say all credit to everyone who turned out today in such awful weather. It was great to have a run in the 5 mile fell race for the first time before putting the waterproofs on and organizing the track races for seniors & juniors. Great to meet Daletownrunner to who had a good run in the 5 mile fell race. Just hope next years show is not as wet.

And nice to finally meet you Mark. All credit to all involved in organizing this great show (especially the lad in the tractor, a bit of a moment when I realised I'd never checked in the boot for my towing eye, luckily it was there:thumbup, as you say lets hope next years show is a little drier, hope you had a decent turnout on the track

The lad on the tractor looked as though he was having a great time towing everyone out and did a brilliant job:thumbup:. We did alright in the track races with some close finishes considering the weather.

Sometimes the races in adverse conditions are the most memorable and this will probably be the case here. We thought it was wet when we arrived, but actually the real rain was still to come: lashings, torrents, bucketsfull. The first race was mostly a trail race after a very short grassy climb, closely fought between Paul Dugdale of Kendal and Tom gibbs of Ambleside. Two hours later they got to repeat the rivalry, even closer this time, in the short lungbuster race. Paul just winning on both occassions. The fastest i ran was between the registration tent and the tea tent, there to glug hot sweet tea in a futile attempt to keep warm in between races.
All in all,a lovely English summers day out
