    Breidden Hills (10 October)

This is the first race in the Shropshire Winter Series.

I've not done it before and would like to recce. Anyone have a map or description of the route?

    Cheers
    Jim

Bumped - come on people, someone must have done this race - or is the Shropshire Powys mafia keeping mum?

Ok - I thought I'd leave it to someone who could put it more clearly than I could but you're stuck with me I'm afraid. Starts from car park at Criggion and up the fire track in a south easterly direction. Carry on all the way up until it turns sharply right. After this carry on for 400 m before taking a turn to the left down a narrow track. You'll run through a wet, boggy area and through a farmer's field in an ESE direction with hedge on your right, over a style carry on then along a farmer's driveway, turn left when meeting the road. after 100m turn right and start climbing the first hill. This is a toughy, need good grip, it undulates but you're generally heading WSW until you get to the top which is just past what you thought (hoped) was the top when climbing. That's the first of the three hills climbed. Fast descent straight over at the top. After a steep drop you're faced with many possible routes, take the one to the right of going straight on or you'll land yourself in a small world of gorsey pain. On reaching the road carry on (westwards) then after 90m turn left (south) into farmer's field over gate. You can follow this up in a general WSW direction to the summit of the forested and lovely Moel y Golfa (Moldy Gopher to ignorant English people like me). After the summit it's about as gnarly as it gets in this part of the world - don't get too carried away or you'll fall off a small but steep precipice. Follow the ridge down SW then when it flattens out in the words go down steeply to the right. At the bottom turn right and right again (I think) to follow a small track which reaches the road. Carry on (up) the road. After a couple of hundred metres a drive will cut down to the left. Take it and follow it past a caravan on the right then through tall vegetation to the style. Over the style and right. Carry on up (climbing steadily) as far as you can then straight over at a forest road. Nice narrow section across area called (New PIeces). When this gets you to a wider track carry on to the right then take the left after about 30-50metres. Pass a glade (fancy I know) with picnic bench on right (avoid panicking pheasants/grouse), hit the road. Straight over and down a little bit, through the gate and right - slam it for the person behind you! Pretty much take a direct line for the summit of Rodney's pillar from there. Round pillar then down to the right (spectators will tell you if you're wrong - maybe!). Over tricky rocks in wood. Through kissing gate (no time for that!) straight down great, fast narrow track. Left at the end. Follow down through forest then it leads you to the right steeply down throught the trees (a la Rodney's pillar race). Reach the fire track and head left, you're almost there, but not before many false endings and thoughts of 'why do I do this sport? - I'm not made for it!' 1/2 mile later it's all over.

NOw I know why no-one else tried to explain the route. It's easier to run than explain and it's a beast to run. It's a great race, varied terrain and interesting. I'll see you there mate.

I knew it was a bad idea to check out the forums at work...

Couldn't have put it better myself I've got the Langdale Horseshoe in the lakes the day before so may be a bit of a struggle. However, last year I did a half marathon the day after Langdale so it my be on.
Great race in a great part of the country.

That's a fair summary. Alternatively, I'll try and keep up with you and shout if I see you going astray (doesn't help the recce though!)
