Looks like there will be a few more forumites on the March course, Blackfoot and I enjoyed the September course at Elterwater but Chris K was the only other person on the course who owned up to being a forum member.

Right, sorry for the delay. It's looking like the course I've arranged is going to be on Wednesday 17th. I quote the following e-mail from the guy who's running it so those interested can judge for themselves whether it suits them:

The day spends about 1.5 hours in the class room followed by a
6 mile walk over some taxing moorland. By the end of the session you’d be familiar with using a compass on open moorland and techniques for more advanced navigation, pacing and timing. The day starts at 9.30am until about 4.30pm.

You would need to provide your own packed lunch and personal walking
equipment. We can provide maps (O.S. White Peak and Dark Peak Maps)
    and compass.

I am getting a per person price (which I suspect will be dependant on numbers.)

Would those who want to go ahead please PM me and I will send out price and location details, etc. in the next day or so.

I hear it was a most spectacular location at Elterwater. And someone mentioned the service, the hostel, the food and the staff were of the highest order. "Better than the Ritz," I think someone else might have said.

Which reminds me, *ahem*, that the Elterwater course is being run again this September. And as they say, book early to avoid disappointment.

Okay, so the Ritz comment was a mis-quote...

Knolls? Who was she? Was she the fit one that was on the course?

P.S. Seriously, what are Knolls? You talking about hummocky things? Why?

Knolls are the most common feature that we used for navigating, they were the instructors favourites. The 'Challenge' event on the Sunday was sub-titled 'Death by Knolls' !

It's now sorted. The course will be next Wednesday, the 17th January. It'll start at 9.30am and finish at around 4.30pm. As noted, the first hour will be in the classroom, the rest outdoors. I have a brief course description that I can e-mail out. Maps (O.S. Dark Peak and White Peak) will be provided.

I won't post the exact location here...as I'd like to get an idea of numbers so I can let the organisers know, I will e-mail it to those who want to attend...but it's basically in Eyam, 15 miles west of Sheffield if you need to know general whereabouts to help you decide if it's feasible. I should also mention that the guy running the course is an extremely experienced outdoor guide who is a Vice President of the British Mountaineering Council and sits on the executive committee of the Moutain Leader Training Board. He is aware that the attendees will be fell runners and should tailor things accordingly.

Cost will be a maximum of 30 quid each (if only one other person shows up) and 20 quid each if three or more. On the present evidence judged by expressions of interest, it's likely to be 20 quid.

If you want to attend please PM me and I will send directions, links, and details.

A suggestion for forum members to consider : make a spectacular navigational 'error' and just happen to end up at a local pub.

Would somebody please post the correct grid references for the best pubs in the area?
