    I hadn't read that article before, cheers. It is interesting what we find erotic and what seems pornographic...possibly too early in the day for that kind of debate though!

    I have to say that I prefer the suggestiveness of Hattersley's poem to the 'leave nothing to the imagination' style of Auden's but anyway, how about a bit of Tennyson.

    The Eagle

    He clasps the crag with crooked hands;
    Close to the sun in lonely lands,
    Ringed with the azure world, he stands.

    The wrinkled sea beneath him crawls;
    He watches from his mountain walls,
    And like a thunderbolt he falls.

    Glad you liked it. Will drip-feed some more of the same into this thread from time to time!

    Oh Lordy! I just read it at work. Somewhere in this organisation and alarm is going off and the internet police closing in.
    Might have more time for running in the next few weeks!

    The last verse could be the template for the proposed gathering of the Fell Poets Society - which I think should be the night before a race, otherwise it'd be the Dead Poet's Society and that's already been done!
    I was just about to say that the last verse is my idea of a good date but I think you have the right idea. Looks like it could be a really good gathering. We won't be trying to race each other the day after either, we'll be too busy composing haiku!

    Well said Hes, and The Eagle has helped my spirits soar too. Thanks

    Re: Today's poet

    Seven pounds six ounces
    Bundle of snugglyness
    Dad loves him and Mum

    This one's for Mrs H: -

    Christy Moore - Voyage

    I am a sailor, you're my first mate
    We signed on together, we coupled our fate
    Hauled up our anchor, determined not to fail
    For the hearts treasure, together we set sail

    With no maps to guide us we steered our own course
    Rode out the storms when the winds were gale force
    Sat out the doldrums in patience and hope
    Working together we learned how to cope

    Life is an ocean and love is a boat
    In troubled water that keeps us afloat
    When we started the voyage, there was just me and you
    Now gathered round us, we have our own crew

    Together we're in this relationship
    We built it with care to last the whole trip
    Our true destination's not marked on any charts
    We're navigating to the shores of the heart

    Close your eyes, listen to the lyrics, and if a tear comes to your eye, you'll know exactly how wonderfully happy I am at the moment.
