    routes around glenridding yha?

    hi all,

i'm due to be visting the lakes this coming bank holiday weekend and wondered if anyone had any suggestions for routes around glenridding yha? nothing too long (i'll be with the mrs and couldn't get away with abandoning her all day), say, 5-10 miles at the most. i'm not exactly at the peak of physical fitness at the moment but am really looking forward to getting stuck into some proper fell running.

    cheers.

    neil.

Try the Grisedale Horseshoe route. Head up from Glenridding to ? Tarn, straight up the side of Catstycam, along Swirrel Edge to Helvellyn, head along and down to Grisedale Tarn, follow traverse path up to top of St Sunday Crag, then look for gully with stream to drop down into Glenridding again. The race itself has a sting in the tail with a climb back up to the Hole in the Wall, but that'd be optional on a training run

    Reckon 9-10 miles and 4000-5000ft

Tarn your thining of is Lanty's Tarn. Another good run would be up to Red Tarn, up Swirral Edge on to Helvellyn, then head over to the Sticks Pass via Whiteside and Raise, probably no more than 6 miles, and about 2000ft of ascent.

I can't be the only one who refers to Swirral Edge as Squirrel Edge?

cheers folks. particularly like the sound of your suggestion graeme, reckon 2000ft of ascent is about all i could attempt at the moment. it'll be my third proper fell run ever (all spaced over some period of time) - wish me luck!

well, thanks again for your suggestions folks. in the end i had to settle for a quick (well, more like painfully slow actually but who's counting) dash up st sundays due to time constraints. enjoyed it so much i went straight out and bought my first pair of pbs! i'm in the area again in july and am now thinking of doing skiddaw. would that be a really stupid choice for my first race? don't even know how long it is.

Well done Downsrunner, glad you enjoyed it.

Personally, I reckon Skiddaw would be a great race to do. No navigation issues at all, plenty of runners, really nice event. The only "downside" is that it's a straight up and straight down run....but it's a great starting point. from memory it's 9 miles and 2700ft.

cheers mr1470, i thought that'd be about the mark. i walked it from applethwaite some years ago and my overriding memory is that the path was both very wide, and very steep. nevertheless i think i'll give it a go if i can claw back at least some of my recently lost fitness - after all, we've all got to start somewhere!
