    Hives

not the sharp-suited swedish rock band

rather, very itchy, prickly raised rash with small round welts (look a bit like blisters or mossy bites)

on the back of my thighs and / or bum, and back of my kneck / shoulders

it's cropped up a few times in the last year or so and lost me a few nights' sleep, and I have a feeling tonight will be another one

apparently it can be linked (among many other things) to exercise and / or rapid temperature change - anyone else suffer from it?

Oddly enough a friend of mine has started having problems with this. (I had never heard of it before) He is a cyclist & his comes on when his skin is exposed to cold, wet conditions. Think he is seeking some medical advice so will let you know what he finds out.

    No Ian I don't.

Yeah Urticaria - which I think is what people mean when they say hives - is what it sound slike. But I think the problem is that it's very hard to know what's causing it - could be an allergy or stress for instance.

more likely to be stress related. Mrs IDP was caused by moving home. Interesting ly we were told by GP twice, Hospital ER Twice, Nurse, and a doctor in hospital for allergies that it would be impossible to work out what allergy it was.

In fact my wife had been told previously that we she was allergic to shell fish and animal hair. We went through hell for 4 months we had the new house professionally cleaned all to no avail. We were put on a waiting list to see the HNS specialist(6months) In the end after another trip to the ER we went private. Within 5 minutes he told what we was wrong and with in a day it was sorted She was on meds for one year but has had no recurrance since.

He also told us that this is quite common but is nearly always misdiagnosed as an allergy because that's what it look like.(usually in a milder form) some times the symptoms can go on for years.

We have two friends who had similar problems(one was told she was allergic to Dairy) both have been to the same specialist both now cured.

This is why I asked about your symptoms.

Our friend now enjoys her cheese and cream and my wife loves shell fish!!

Ian, very interesting, thanks for that.

but what do you mean when you say 'cured': did the specialist diagnose stress in each case and it was simply a case of 'reducing stress'?

I'm not the specialist so don't take this as facts.

What happens is your is something in your life 'triggers' your body in to reacting. In my wifes case it was stress from moving home. Can't comment on my friends as it was something that that had happened years ago.

It was not helped by being stressed about the condition

The syptoms come out as an allergy or in severe cases anaphalactic shock.
We were given an Epi pen

Reducing the stress eased it but did not cure it.

Please note I'm not saying you have this just be aware of it. seeing a GP may not help as the ones we saw and talked to (Including two other friends who are GP's) didn't know of the condition.

Happy to pass on the specialists name. he was based in Deby/Nottingham area

    hope this helps

    Re: Hives

OK thanks a lot Ian. I'm thinking an 'Epi Pen' is some sort of treatment for an allergy-syle attack?

It would make sense if it was stress-related to be honest. But reducing stress is easier said than done isn't it - especially when you can't spleep for bloody itching!
