BGR - Leg 3/4 recce logistics

As the logistics for reccing leg 3 & 4 are quite hard i.e leaving car in Wasdale?? I thought it may help everyone's training if people could car share when doing these legs.

I know there are a number of ways to recce route using different loops from seathwaite etc but it would be better to get a feel for actual legs.

I will let you guys know when I plan to leave car at Wasdale, hopefully before end of Jan/Feb if it ever thaws.

If anyone else is going out on these legs give me a shout and I'll come along and help out with vehicle logistics etc if possible.

Just out of interest on your BGR attempt on 28.05.10 are you going clockwise/anti-clockwise and when do you plan to set off?

Will be setting off about 10.30pm going clockwise. Thoery is that its just getting dark so wont waste good light going up the skiddaw motorway and get the light early on the dodds. I am to go at a 22 hrs pace to allow time for any Nav errors/bonking. If none then will hopefully finish at 8.30pm ish.

28th May has a full moon which might be usefull if sky is clear. Its also a bank holiday weekend so plenty of time to recover for work on Tuesday.

    Are you planning a round?

10.30 is an odd choice, caught between two approaches. Some go at 7pm to ensure light coming off blencathra on Hall's Fell where darkness can add quite a bit of time, others go at midnight or 1am for the same reason.

The light is much more valuable on Hall's Fell that on the the Dodds which are fine in the dark really.

At that time of year there is so much light you're not really "wasting it" going up Skiddaw. IMHO it's more about getting the darkness window right (i.e. on easy ground) rather than rationing the light.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do!

Splutter! Splutter! Work! Get your priorities right man

Agree with ST, try and get Hall's Fell in the light, I lost quite a bit of time on it in the dark due to it also being damp.

Actually with it being a bank holiday makes the support a bit harder with all the extra traffic and the parking being taken up.

But why would anyone come down Hall's Fell when Doddick is so much quicker?

.... and easier, particularly when wet.

Or even Yianis' descent down the gully next to Hall's Fell that is super fast but a bit steep. Even though we had trouble on the Dodds in the dark due to the low cloud I was really glad to have the light till Threlkeld.

And you can do it in the dark, without a torch

I agree that you need light comming off Blencathra. Personally I have never found much differnce between Doddick and Halls fell. I generally am a little quicker doing Halls and like the directness of it. I'd also like some light on that god awful marshy section leading to Clough head as a good line across that terain can save a heap of time. I'd start at 1 or 2am, that way it gets dark again by Robinson.
