The reason he didn't receive it earlier is probably because he was convicted in a French court in 1998 of hitting his girlfriend. There has been some criticism today about the award of his knighthood because of this.

However Boycott has always maintained his innocence and an investigation by the Telegraph a few years ago suggested he might have been wrongly convicted.
