Looking for a "do it all" trail shoe which I can use on mixed runs, say half on road, half trail. Any recommend a Salomon shoe? My main concern is they're quite heavy.

I started a thread called 'grippy cushioned shoe' or something once, it may help you as it had legs so to speak; no pun intended.
Depends on your running style and how much heel cushioning you want. I had some Salomon XT Wings which were good, but I now prefer something with less heel padding. Looking to Adidas AdiZero for this next.
I am amazed Inov8insider has taken this long to join the thread - come on get off yer twitching site and get a-promotin'
Ok for nice dry alpine trails but useless in a bit of mud,i'd go for some inov8's,maybe Roclite 320's or 285's
The Speedcross 2 is a decent shoe, very comfortable indeed with reasonable grip.
I went round Wasdale in 2008 in them without any issues.
They are great for harder trail running. I've used them on alpine trails a lot and in races such as the Cross du Mont Blanc and the Trail des Aiguilles Rouges.
I will be using them later in the year for the Marathon du Mont Blanc and the CCC in August.
XA Pros I use for walking only.
My experience of Salomon trail shoes is that they are very competent range.
The XT Wings is an excellent shoe on trails and and surfaces where an aggressive grip isnt needed (steep grassy stuff), with good support and cushioning. Also there are some new XA Pro 5 shoes coming in the summer I think, which weigh around 300gms, so a fair bit lighter than the XA pro 3d's.
Agree with BGSec on the Speed Cross 2's. I use these shoes a lot for training and racing and they are very comfortable, grip well on loose and steep ground are very good on trails and less severe / harder packed surfaces.
Versus the likes of the inov8 X talon 212's the shoes are not as light, but at around 245 grams weight wise the SC2's are pretty good.
Hope this helps Celine...
I have SpeedCross 2 also and find them good. One downside is that they don't drain that well and are perhaps a bit hot for summer use.

thanks Derby Tup, it wasnt meant to come across as a sales pitch, was just offering my opinion to Celine as someone who knows a fair bit about the Salomon product
For the record I also train and race in lots of other great shoes, inov8 MudClaws (love em), 212s (which are excellent), Walsh PB's (the pioneers) and Brooks Cascadias (really are comfy on a trail run) - all excellent shoes
