Many thanks for all the get well messages and pms. No news to report on the leg I'm afraid yet. I'm guessing my post rate on the forum might shoot up though!
Phil Jones, I had a kag which was the kit requirement for the race. In hindsight I would have obviously carried more.
I guess it's a case of gauging the right kit for the race. If I was running in a fell relay or in a mountain marathon, I would bring enough clothes as to be self sufficient.
In contrast, if I ran in a BOFRA race, (maybe only 1.5 miles long) I wouldn’t carry any extra kit, (albeit the weather is obviously better when most of these races take place).
In a 6 mile, marshaled, flagged race, on a reasonably mild day, I think an in between stance is obviously needed. I think it is a very selfish attitude to think of the kit you carry being solely for yourself. I personally would donate my emergency kit to an injured runner if I was in a position to run on and keep warm.…I guess having this attitude may have caused some ‘good karma’ for me on Saturday!
It’s a hard one to call, but given that there were 360 runners and one accident, in this instance the kit requirement was sufficient for the race. Even if there had been 90 accidents like mine, there would have still been enough kit for 4 kags per runner. Also, the marshals were sensibly carrying emergency kit, and were well distributed. I appreciate that some people choose to carry more kit than others. But the reality is that carrying enough kit to stay fully warm whilst not moving on top of a hill, would require a 25 litre day sack. You simply wouldn’t be competitive if carrying that much extra weight.
I would be interested in hearing people’s opinions. One consolidation for me is that I notice from the photos that people in the top 15 (where I would have finished given a more upright descent!) only appear to be carrying the same level of kit as I was.

Thanks to all who turned up to make this the biggest Shepherds Skyline race ever (by far!) with 92 juniors and 363 seniors competing. Apart from Andy's unfortunate injury and problems with car parking (we ran out of road - may need to limit nos next year?) everything ran very smoothly. It must have been tough conditions as you polished 1 cwt of hot pot between you! We're still sorting out a few results glitches but bear with us as Mandy should have these done by tonight.
Thanks to all the helpers and Marshalls who helped make it happen - another great team effort by Tod Harriers, and to the Shepherds Rest Inn for providing a top venue (a great place to call in for a few drinks and good food if you're ever in the area).
Special thanks to the marshalls who assisted in Andy's rescue and to all the runners who stopped to offer help and kit (see kitlist of gear at bottom of post to reclaim items lent). The rescue happened quickly and smoothly - testament to our comms and safety system and to the emergency services and local MRTs. We'll be sending our thanks together with a donation to the local MRT.
Just been round to see Andy and he's in good spirits despite not being able to move his leg yet. I'm sure you all join us in wishing him a speedy recovery.

I know they love their work the MR team but why carry him all the way to Cragg Vale, there are roads much closer.
I hope the BBc don't get hold of this![]()
Hey A.G.
Where you really "Dramatically Rescued"??
Yeah, just like the 1500 dramatically rescued at the OMM a few weeks ago!
Nah, no drama, just cool efficiency.
