Just done day 2 of a 4 day fell & mountain running course. (2 more days in March)

Witton Park, Clash City Rocker and myself are all currently doing it.

A very good course with loads to learn and take in.

We are going to try and start a network to share good practice, will keep you in touch.

    Daz, I am Level 2.

Level 1 was just a listening session and a few practical bits and pieces.

Level 2 was a 2 stage job; a half day by way of preparatory stuff followed a number of months later by a full day, involving a practical assessment of your coaching skills. Most fell runners opt for the Endurance module as against Sprints or Throws and Jumps.

(This was a while ago and with all the upheaval at UKA, things may have changed!)

Between the 2 stages of Level 2 we were encouraged to do plenty of coaching and to keep a written log of what we had done.

Pete Shields of Ilkley Harriers is Level 5 and has been closely involved with UKA in getting a Fell module off the ground. There was a pilot session at the Cow and Calf Hotel in Ilkley about 2 years ago and it looks like the module (Level 3, I think) is finally getting off the ground.

Stagger may be able to say more seeing as how he is in the thick of it.

    Have fun.

I've done level 1 and the first part of level 2 ,I would think level 1 is pretty much mandatory if you want to work with youngsters. I did hear level 1 was to be a 2 day course instead of the 1 day we did. 13 of us did level 1 on the same day at Rossendale Harriers.

As far as I am aware, level 2 is held over two days not split into 2 sections

The level 2 specific to fell and mountain running is held over 4 days (2 x 2 weekends) then there is an additional assessment session.

    Re: coaching courses

I got my level 2 about 18 months ago. We were told then that UKA were imminently moving over to UKCC accredited courses which would involve a lot more than the current course (twice the amount of time at each level essentially). As far as I can tell this hasn't happened yet.

The level 2 course as it is at the moment IS actually held over 2 weekends. You have to attend the first weekend in entirety. The second weekend involves doing a specialist module (sprints, endurance, throws or jumps) and being assessed at the same time. This only takes one day unless you want to do more than 1 module.
