I spoke to him quite a bit about fellrunning, didn't realise at the time that it was his first fellrace, but he certainly enjoyed it.

Had loads of help from juniors, esp in the kitchen. Great bunch of kids!!

Brett, thanks for a great race: I brought two of my boys along for their first ever fell race, they loved it (George was the one helping collecting the numbers) - result, yet another bonkers activity Dad has managed to brain wash them into!

Bob is correct on the technical side of things, I was using a Canon 1D3 with a 70-200 f2.8 lens set wide open using mostly the 80-100mm focal length. It was pretty dark!

As for Al Fowler's request I will have a look at the details for the Winter Hill Fell Race - coincidentally I am crossing darkest Lancashire on Sunday to go to the rugby at St Helens so I'll see how the times match up.

It's called "depth of field" and is basically a relationship between the focal length of the lens and the aperture used. Often referred to as the area "in focus". Only one distance from the camera is truly in focus, DoF is actually those parts of the photo that are sharp enough to appear to be in focus.

Dave was using a Canon DSLR, not sure of the model - I was trying to race! A digital compact camera uses a lens with a very short focal length due to the small sensor sizes used, typically 5 - 15mm. On a 35mm SLR these would be extreme wide angles with huge depth of field so everything appears in focus. Dave would have been using a zoom around 50 - 100mm so there is less depth of field hence the background appearing fazed.

weather forcast was almost bang on! .. unsure what laurel and hardy were doing during the race aka woger & pudgy.. did they both go to the pub half way thru or smat??
