They think you're either mad or sad. Which either used to make me mad or just feel sad that they don't get it. Mostly nowadays i care less. I've been meaning to sit quietly one evening by the river at the back of our house and wait for the badgers to come out of their hidey hole. It's got to make for better viewing than modern life, eh?

    I'd second that.

I suppose the flipside is that you could go on in that vein for a while, and nowt might change, you bimble on as was. Whereas by quitting you are making a definite grab for freedom and / or change - the high-risk strategy.

I've always been able to follow my feelings, and guess its never too late to start. Most wisdom on this is true I find, including if you do what you enjoy then money will turn up.

    Good thread.

I'm actually considering it now DT, shame i'm so risk averse and careful with cash really. I'd have to get a Cub 90 to get to work on to save fuel for rent/mortgage but obviously it would be worth it.

Fascinating thread. I'm very much with Merry and Ratfink, work has always been absolutely crucial to me as my upbringing had almost no cash in it and I'm my own retirement plan, no comfort blanket sadly. Hence I work hard when necessary and work has always come before anything else - so far thats done the trick. But I have become too work absorbed and so in 2 weeks time I start a new job in a new area; no foreign travel, no glamour and no visceral intellectual drive but, an office with a window, gym 200m away and woods to run/bike around very close. Its a huge change for me to step away from an atmosphere of totally driven specialists so...we shall see. I will either chill a little more or become massively frustrated, no idea which.

On a separate note - winter in the Lakes. It is almost impossible to find running/walking/biking guides from Sep through 'till Easter. For a freelancer with links to perhaps Bilbo's, The Climbers Shop etc there could well be a market. Not large, but a niche for somebody willing to get out in bad weather.

Years a go when in quite a senior job with lots of pressure. I was sat in my office after a 15 hour day when some one wisely passed on an old a pretty well known saying. I think it really sums it up....

    You been reading my blog?!?!

Only just catching up with this and have only read the first 2 pages.....but it's typifying how I feel about modern life. You get stuck on a man-made treadmill, earning money to spend on things you don't need and to buy convenience food which kills you slowly......and there IS a way out. You just have to accept the lower income....but then how much money do you need to live a simpler lifestyle?

I gave up full-time work last year and moved north to Calderdale. Things didn't quite work out (for various reasons, life is never as simple as you think!), but I'm still not going full-time and we have plans for an even simpler, more peaceful life in the near future.

As for DazH's comments, me and Kirsten were talking only the other day about taking a year or two out and just living in a van. Why not?

    Re: Work Life Balance?

What are the practicalities of living in a van re. pitches etc? What is the longest a campsite will usually allow you to stay? Can you make arrangements for a 'long-term stays' in a spot with your campervan? I suppose if you find a friendly farmer with a spare corner of a field who just wants a few bob, you're sorted aren't you.
